Working together

Sitting in the office I often hear the question, “Can you help me with…?” Because I work in the office my frequent answer is, “Actually, no, I don’t know how to help you with… but I know somebody who can!”

I am overwhelmed by the amount and the quality of all the ministries done by all those who serve with us.  Probably the only thing that really bothers me is that many of us don’t know or use the resources that are available from the people we work beside.  In this Horizons, we are highlighting Khentii ministries and TEE (Theological Education by Extension).  You might ask, “What does this have to do with me?”

Do you want to start a fun skating event to meet other youth? Marcus would probably be very happy to help.  Other sports programs? There are FootballPlus, Noble Eagles, UB United, Khentii Hockey and probably other individual efforts that I don’t know about.  Are you thinking of greenhouses and do you want to share tips about growing plants? Then talk with Les, or Jeff, or Turkhuu, or ….

If you want to start a Bible study but don’t know where to begin, TEE has great resources in print and will come and train your leaders, if you ask. What about a topical study? Tonya and Pearls of Wisdom have great Christian literature translated into Mongolian.  Are you thinking of ministering to alcoholics? Certainly Celebrate Recovery could help you start a group.

If people feel called into ministry, there is the Mongolian Mission Center in Erdenet and UBTC (Bible College) in the capital, where you could send them for short-term classes, or two- or four-year degrees.  But did you also know that the Mongolian translation of the Youth Alpha course is almost finished? Mone could introduce your church youth group to a great youth ministry tool.

Do you have a friend with medical needs? Yonsei Friendship Hospital is just down the street.  But did you know that if a child has physical disabilities or speech struggles, you can consult Gillian, who works as a speech therapist at Mongolia Asia Reach, and Magda, who works with disabled children and their families in Gobi-Altai?

Christmas is less than 3 months away.  I often spend hours shopping for that perfect gift for the ones I love. If you tend to do the same, why not save some time and help out a project by buying their products?  There are leather pouches for phones and pencils (Shining Stars),  felt angels to dance on your Christmas tree (ArtisAltai), and silver jewelry (Streams in the Desert).

Finally, maybe all I need is a quiet place to relax with a friend over a cup of coffee: Papa Café and Eternal Springs are just the ministries needed to help me do the ministry I am called to.  What about you?  Is there somebody in JCS who can help you with a ministry which they are already doing so well?

Read this issue of Horizons; it should inspire you as you find out what others are doing.  Who knows, it may provide you with another resource from somebody who is already doing what you would  also like to do.
